Apple giving up on cross-platform standards to support their own non-cross-platform replacements. What's the state of OpenGL on Windows 10? - Seems like Microsoft haven't supported OpenGL this century? So they rely on graphics card manufacturers to supply drivers?

Could this also happen on macOS? I thought that 99% of games used DirectX on Windows now anyway. Surely if they have to implement a second platform, they would choose Metal now rather than OpenGL anyway? (NB: I don't know much about this, but looking for more info).

I’m disappointed that there is so much press about specifics of the software when it’s only meant for developers and they have to agree to an NDA. Of course, it’s a beta, but as a first beta release, it's pretty damn solid. Report bugs to Apple via the Feedback Assistant, don’t whinge publicly. I've sent a few in already – mostly trivial UI/UX stuff. Is the bugginess an issue? Not if you’re running it as intended (ie.

To test/develop apps so they’re ready for the official release in September). Expect things to break and don't install it on your primary machine unless you're a risk-taker. I actually hope Apple cracks down on ‘developers’ (especially clueless ‘YouTubers’) who publicly post videos & screenshots of software that's almost certainly going to change before public release in September. This whole beta program (ie. Particularly the public betas) is a double-edged sword IMHO.

The advantage of OpenGL is that it also opens up Linux support. Sure, but that's hardly Apple's concern.

I’m disappointed that there is so much press about specifics of the software when it’s only meant for developers and they have to agree to an NDA. Apple have certainly relaxed that requirement.

And now they have 'public' betas, an NDA makes no sense. I actually hope Apple cracks down on ‘developers’ (especially clueless ‘YouTubers’) who publicly post videos & screenshots of software that's almost certainly going to change before public release in September. That won't happen. And frankly, the reason there's a public beta program now is so that Apple can test on as many devices and in as many situations as possible, to get the most robust final release possible. Is the bugginess an issue? Not if you’re running it as intended (ie. To test/develop apps so they’re ready for the official release in September).

Expect things to break and don't install it on your primary machine unless you're a risk-taker. Sure, the initial developer release is about that. But from public beta release on, the intent is to have the software tested in everyday situations However, I do agree with the overall tone of your post: don't just whinge about bugs, report them to Apple so they can fix them (and I can guarantee from personal experience that they will reach out to you to help them fix bugs at this stage). Even if you think it's only your device that may be suffering from the problem, still report it. Grab that, folks, before Apple hits the developer with a cease-and-desist order. This isn't anything new.

I remember hacking the install packages on Lion to make it work on a Dual-CPU Sawtooth back in the day. There was plenty of instructions on how to do it at the time without take downs. It wasn't worth it in the end, but this is just something similar except instead of you having to unpack the installer to rewrite text portions of the files that do the work, this will do the legwork for you.
